Super Mario Galaxy Review Blog 1

So what's a review blog?

Well, for starters, a review blog consists of a series of posts that contains comments about one part of a certain game. Usually, one post chronicles the game in a span of an hour. And what better way to start a review blog with the game I have waited for quite a long time- Super Mario Galaxy.

I still can't believe it, but I've finally got a copy of Super Mario Galaxy! So far, I'm having a hell of a lot of fun, even if it's a bit easy so far. I've also got my siblings to help me out for co-op action, and frankly, it's a great thing Nintendo did that, though I think it would've been even better if the second player was Luigi. But anyway...

7:00 - I bring up the transformer and plug everything in, open the TV and the Wii and insert the CD in the slot. I press A after the Health Notice and open Super Mario Galaxy after a few seconds.

7:03 - I get to the title screen and press the A+B buttons. I create a new file (marked by a spherical planet), select an avatar (Mii) as an icon (in which of course I picked mine), and wait for the opening which explains the annual celebration of the "Toads" of the Star Festival which occurs every hundred years. Princess Peach's invitation to Mario is then read by well, her voice, and the action starts.

7:05 - I'm treated to a brief shot of Mario jumping giddily after reading the invitation and I instantly gain control. In the aesthetics department, the graphics look beautiful... beyond expectation, and beyond Wii capabilities. I mean, minor details like water, is even mesmerizing and realistic and though I would've wanted to look at it more, it seems that there is imminent trouble.

7:07 - A beautiful cutscene then appears, and Bowser arrives to cackle and kidnap Peach on a spaceship. Actually, the cutscenes are not pre-rendered, it uses the in-game engine, though comparing from the shots in Super Mario Sunshine, its predecessor, the cutscenes and the game itself look a lot better.

7:09 - I gain control once again, star bits start to fall and my sister helps me collect them. A few steps further into the castle and another cutscene occurs. Bowser starts to put his uhh... crane onto the castle and Peach hugs her fat star in fright. She then screams "Mario!" in desperation, and Mario goes nearer to the castle. Bowser cackles even more, and lifts the castle into space. Of course, Bowser wouldn't be one to let Mario ruin his plans this quick, so he gets this magician to cast a spell and send Mario into, you guessed it, another planet. The same fat star goes down to him and wakes him up (because he was unconscious at the time) and he wakes up.

7:13 - Control is restored and I go near the three stars. The stars then instruct me to jump using A, and they say that if Mario plays hide and seek with them, they can say whatever planet he's on. So I am put on a "challenge" of hide and seek. It took a few minutes to find one of them, as they would be persistent little things. When you step on flowers or grass, star bits also appear and the occasional coin. If you point on these colorful 3D stars, you instantly get them. There are lots of uses for these stars, but they would be introduced later into the first hour of the game. Oh, didn't I mention that they transformed into rabbits?

7:15 - One of them would finally be caught by shaking the Wiimote when I was near it, and it hints that "I should've hidden in the crater", so I look for craters and find another star/rabbit. Actually, I wasn't quite ready for the fact that the camera would display Mario upside-down if you went to the lower end of a world, but it wasn't very confusing at all... OK, maybe a bit. Moving on, I caught the second star/rabbit and it also hinted about where the third star was hiding.

7:18 - They would transform back to their chubby starry forms, and agree that Mario could help "Mama". This "Mama" would be in the form of a "hot momma" called Rosalina. She tells about the starship and as to why it was in an immobile, blackened-out state. She gets this so-called "Luma" to grant Mario powers to spin attack and travel in space and I wave my remote to this sort of catapult to send me to the tutorial level. It would be full of Shrooms (the brown mushrooms) to spin, star bits to collect (I get my first 1UP here after collecting 50 of them), and coins.

7:20 - I get to this structure after going down a pipe, and I collect coins, lose my first life after getting electrocuted, and collect the coins by going on this sort of moving thingy. I would get surprised as to why my life would be restored when time passed, so I surmised that the life system was quite pointless at that point. I also spin a few Shrooms, collect a few more coins and finally get to that machine.

7:24 - Well, this is when I discovered that I had to step on these yellow blocks to deactivate the machine, so after stepping on the blocks around the machine, I went back up to the part where there were those moving thingies, and activated de-activated those blocks. I would get electrocuted again, and I was surprised again that it didn't heal overtime, so I thought, there should be some reason as to why the HP gets restored...

7:26 - The machine would finally get turned off, and the Grand Star would restore its shiny luster. I went near it, and got my first Grand star! A cutscene then shows the star restoring power to a part of the spaceship, in which Rosalina would be after the fade-out. She tells the story about it, and how you would start the real journey.

7:28 - I go to the Observatory and this chubby star would say that the blue star would transform so that when I pointed and pressed A at it, I could get a bird's eye view of the whole galaxy. I pressed the planet that had "NEW!" labeled on it, and it eventually became "The Good Egg Planet". Complete with a huge egg and all.

7:29 - I would catapult myself there and an exhilarating scene would occur. It would let me choose a level, and of course, it would only have one called "The Good Egg" (I think). The scene would continue, and star bits would follow me (which you could actually collect). Mario lands on the planet, and spin attack a few uhhh... creatures. There's this locked house and a garden. Knowing that they would contain, I walk on the flowers to get coins and stars and go down the green pipe to see another chubby star that would say that I should collect as many Star bits as I could. I did, and I then went down to this orange pipe which would give me a 1UP after completing the legendary Super Mario Bros. 2nd level melody. The walking on walls thing is quite cool, and surprisingly fun as well. I get back up the orange pipe, and collect more star bits.

7:32 - I would then get up on this silly flat bridge and spin attack a Shroom and catapult to another part of the planet.

7:33 - I would land to the part of the planet with the huge egg. Well actually, I landed on the egg itself, which would partially crack. Cries could be heard, and it would signal me to further crack it. But I didn't because I had a few more Star bits to safely collect, but without thinking, I spun attacked the creature's tail, which would lead to the full cracking of the egg. The piranha (venus fly trap in the Mario world) would roar and invite me to a fight. I did. And it was frankly easy. You should spin attack the tail for three times and the thing dies. Afterwards, you get a Grand Star and get back to the Observatory.

7:38 - By this time, my sister would get bored and my brother would take the Player 2 post. I would catapult to the next level in the same planet after I get this tutorial from the star in the observatory about shooting star bits on enemies to stun them and feed hungry Lumas. Anyway, I went back to the catapult thingy to go to Good Egg planet and selected the second level called the Hungry uhhh... Star? I forgot the exact title. But anyway, the same exhilarating scene would occur (I'll be expecting a lot more of this...) and I would land on the same place with the house and all.

7:40 - I went up the stairs to see this chubby star talk about the hungy Luma and he would catapult me there after I shook the Wiimote. I would then see the hungy Luma who demands a hundred stars. I fed her by pressing and holding B until she forms a new part of the planet. Actually, she's pretty darn funny when she's full, 'cause she's adorably fatter than usual.

7:41 - I shook the Wiimote at the star-shaped ultra-trampoline to catapult myself to that part and I was tasked to collect a few star pieces to form the same star-shaped trampoline. It wasn't that easy, though as there were hazardous boulders rolling around the sphere. I got hit when I was gonna get the last piece, but I restored energy when I discovered that collecting coins would heal me.

7:43 - I catapulted myself to this sort of mountain like sphere and I would spin attack my way to the next trampoline, as well as the little piranhas that grow these vines to climb up at.

7:48 - I would then reach this sort of capsule thingy that would get me playing a 2D mini-level of sorts. The down arrows would indicate that the gravity of that part is high, and the up arrows would indicate that the gravity is low. After a few attempts at getting through a certain obstacle, I would finally get to the last catapult of the level.

7:54 - I landed on this star and I had to form star pieces to get the Grand star. Of course, you had to think differently because the star pieces weren't readily shown on the surface. Instead of you being scared of falling down, you had to go down because you would just get... flipped into the lower part of the planet. I collected all 5 star pieces and I would be tasked to aim the pointer at the them and try to collect the star. It wasn't easy I'm telling you, because it took great timing and precision to do that. The star would be located in the center, and you had to point to one part of the star and press another one after a few milliseconds, as I discovered. It took quite a bit of time, but I nailed it.

7:57 - After collecting the Grand star, I would be redirected to the Observatory, and a new planet would be available. I saved instead and opted to turn off the Wii. But it seems that after we switched controllers in the middle (because it was almost out of battery) and connected the Nunchuk, it seemed to worked just fine. Why is this important you ask? Well, it's because that I have been nagging about it being broken and all for a hell of a long time, and guess what? IT'S FINALLY FIXED! YES!

7:59 - I would perform a few tests with the other Nunchuk, and it worked fine, too.

8:00 - Turned the thing off, switched off the transformer and the air-conditioning breaker and went down to do this blog post. Haha.

Stay tuned for the next edition... 'coz, this is the end of this one.

In the News Number 4

BREAKING NEWS
Glorietta 2 bombs. Literally.
The Ayala-owned shopping mall has just been bombed just yesterday noon and it was a tragic mess of cars, shrapnel and not to mention, glass. Officials at first didn't want to alarm people of a bomb, but they eventually admitted that there is a presence, or a whiff, of powder in the site. My condolences go to the victimized families...

8 people have been confirmed dead and more than 30 are casualties. (UPDATE: 9 people have now been confirmed dead.)

JDV and Gloria: From closest ally to arch-nemesis

Though it's not very literal, it's close. President Gloria and the Speaker De Venecia have reportedly been silently fighting over the recent bribery held within MalacaƱang Palace grounds which involve his son and the First Gentleman as the AFP and other sectors of government can testify. And no, Gloria wasn't there (at the bribery) as previously stated yesterday in the Inquirer (they have an erratum today).

Ermita denies quitting
"I'll stick by Mrs. Arroyo's side." said Eduardo Ermita in response to rumors about his resignation due to the President's decision not to fire the Cabinet member who gave out quite a lot of money to congressmen, and governors. Now that's loyalty for ya...

3 bishops want GMA to quit
If Ermita isn't quitting, these bishops want Gloria to. The three are namely Archbishop Emeritus Julio Labayen of Infanta, Quezon, Bishop Antonio Tobias of Novaliches, and Bishop Deogracias IƱiguez of Caloocan who are advisers of the NGO called Kilusang Makabansang Ekonomiya. Their efforts have been sparked by issues such as the ZTE scam, the Hello Garci scandal and the distribution of money to lawmakers and local officials. They believe that the sooner GMA gets toppled, the sooner would be the recovery of our country. Ironically, the peso which weakened during the Estrada and earlier Arroyo era is currently fighting fit and stronger than ever at 44.240 pesos to a dollar.

Joining the Bandwagon
Estrada may be detained but his wife ain't. Former senator Dr. Luisa Estrada has joined the opposition who calls for the President to resign. When asked about the giving of funds during the Estrada era, which has been likened to the mroe recent one involving Arroyo and the Speaker, she responds, "We did distribute cash. But we issued a receipt and did not put them in paper bags!". She describe the alleged distribution of cash as "garapalan" or barefaced (I agree.).

Cops now securing Quezon City malls post Makati blast
Fresh from the traumatic Glorietta blast came the preemptive response of the Quezon City Police District which will now cover EDSA, Cubao, Fairview and Commonwealth Avenue and make checkpoints near malls in these respective areas. It has not been known whether the Glorietta blast was a terrorist attack. (It certainly isn't safe anymore...)

GOOD NEWS

Prisoners at it again
The dancing prisoners at Cebu are at it again and with something new this time around. Though users aren't as thrilled as they were with the Thriller video, their rendition of Rico Mambo has become more popular compared to past videos excluding Thriller.

Great time to be a Mario fan
November is almost here and Mario fans are waiting. Drooling, rather, for the biggest ever Mario game release on a Nintendo platform since Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo (well,) 64.
Of course, Galaxy is the one I'm talking about and it'll be on the Wii (obviously). It features new power-ups, huge stages and exhilirating space traversing as well as 2-player assist.

Okami gets Wii treatment
Capcom has appointed acclaimed developer Ready at Dawn to tweak a few controls of the once PS2-exclusive adventure but will retain all elements of found in the original since it's a direct port. Now Wii gamers can brush their enemies away and color the world literally as the sun god in this acclaimed adventure game originally developed by the now defunct Clover Studios.

Street Fighter IV
An awaited sequel ten years in the waiting line has finally been announced. Capcom's flagship fighting series has now gone next-gen will be released in maybe the fourth quarter of 2008 or early 2009 since the details given were extremely vague. "The latest chapter in the popular beat-'em-up series isn't coming anytime soon," warns Capcom. How hazy can you get?! Only a teaser has been released as of now with their website saying, "The long wait is over."

Gear up for more Wii Resident Evil action!
Resident Evil 4: Wii edition has been awarded as the definitive version of a modern classic. Now, they are attempting to utilize the new Wii Zapper accessory in their new light-gun rail shooter version of Resident Evil, subtitled Umbrella Chronicles. Doubts are going to be present since Capcom hasn't really had any luck with Resident Evil light-gun shooters. Hopefully this'll turn the tide and become as fun as House of the Dead.

PS3 cuts price again
Stop it, Sony. C|Net has already made a "What if Sony wasn't stupid video.". You know why? 'Coz it still costs $400 with a Spiderman 3 Blu-ray bundle! That's still not cheap at all!

Another flop for Palm
It seems that 2007 isn't really the year for Palm. Following the Palm Foleo flop (lappie that pairs with a Treo), the Palm Centro, which looks somehow like a Treo, only smaller, has disappointed the lot at C|Net. I guess you'll have to try again next year, Palm.

Apple outlines Leopard upgrade path
Critics have long criticized the new Macintosh hardware not only with crappy support, but with unannounced upgrade paths. Now, it seems that Apple has made a great deal for Mac buyers in and beyond October 1- they get a free upgrade to Leopard (with 10 dollars shipping). Sucks for early upgraded Mac adopters, though. They have to shell out a hundred and 20 bucks which is a bargain in itself, actually.

It will feature a revamped (and eye-poppingly) gorgeous desktop which makes use of wonderful 3D effects for the Dock, Stacks which store a lot of applications in an entirely convenient and fun way, Spaces which transport you effortlessly from one desktop to another, Cover Flow for a scenic view of your documents and not just album art right in the Finder, Time Machine which is the most user-friendly back-up utility I've ever seen, simplified Sharing which also includes Windows PC's in the network, Quick Look which gives you a Live Preview of every document or video, etc., WebClip for making widgets out of web pages and new and improved existing applications (how ironic). It will be released in 6 days, 6 hours and 56 minutes as of this writing.

iPhone becomes iMacPhone?
Yes, the name I made was corny. But Apple has finally announced a new Developer's Kit for making real applications on the iPhone which until February 2008, will rely on Web applications.

Must-have Wii Games!

I've been feeling that there's a bit of a shortage on my own collection of Wii games. It's not that I'm sick of the unit and the games I have in possession. I mean, I'm not actually sick of any of the games yet! But if you here the prospect of me only having 10 games at present, it's actually a bit of a small number now at almost 3 months of possession.

So now, I'm gonna put must-have Wii games, not only for me to remember what good games are out there, but for other Wii owners as well. So here are the titles I'm currently jumping at excitement for:

Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games - Yes, it's more focused on kids. But the showdown 20 years in the making between two mega gaming mascots is an offer that's irresistible, especially between those who closely followed said competition in the 80's. It may not be as fierce as you want to be (It's rated E for Everybody!) but at least it will finally happen. I have my inhibitions, though (Nintendo is not creating it, Sega, the creator of lame games like Shadow the Hedgehog, etc., is. But maybe there will be a fresher perspective that way?). Still, it looks like a great family/party game, the graphics look as good as pre-rendered video, and at least it puts Mii's to good use... But wait a sec, a fat plumber versus a fast hedgehog in a foot race?! You gotta be kidding! (UPDATE) Good news! Shigeru Miyamoto, legendary game designer is supervising! If he thinks it's too indecent to his perfectionist standards, he'll scrap everything and do it all over again if he wants to!

Zelda: Twilight Princess - OK, it's a Wii launch title and everybody with a Wii already has this. But I don't, solely due to defects of the Greenhills copy.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Most everyone with a Wii has already been craving for it ever since before the Wii's launch. But it has unluckily been once again delayed for next year but its huge fanbase is willing to wait. And what this fighter, as the title apparently indicates, offers is the match-up of classic Nintendo characters, famous and obscure, as well as third-party characters such as Snake from Metal Gear Solid and the more recently announced, Sonic the Hedgehog. The game provides manic action that probably inspired a little imitation called Digimon Rumble Arena 2. If the predecessor was heavily praised and commercially successful despite the GameCube's flop, why should this be any different?

Bleach: Shattered Blade - As I have said before, I'm not much of a fan of anime versus games. But the moves here are cool looking and I might as well give it a shot. It's Sega developed too, though.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - What's life without a little strategy? This challenging strategy game gives you control over troops in a battlefield. A.I. will probably be tough so don't expect easy ways to get done with a chapter in this acclaimed Nintendo game!

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - I've been a fan of Guitar Hero ever since the PS2 era, then during the high of Frets on Fire. Now, the Wii gets a piece of the shredding action
Super Mario Galaxy - Of course, Wii owners are looking forward to the biggest Mario event since Super Mario 64! You can traverse through different planets and jump on shrooms along the way as well as experience physics and gravity defied (or at work) in different types of planets. The exhilarating feel of being catapulted to another planet is a big plus. Of course, there'll be bound to be lots of surprises in this new Mario game... especially if the influential Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and other Nintendo heavyweights) is on the helm.

(UPDATE) Trauma Center: New Blood - I can't believe I forgot this! This game will totally rock! But before I get more excited about this, let me shed some light on this game (unless you remember that other post a long time ago). It's about a doctor, two doctors actually (in this installment), who work together and in a hospital to save patients via surgery. The special thing about them is that they have an ability called the healing touch which slows down time to save patients in their most critical condition. The Wii motion-sensitive controls come into play perfectly in this second Wii release of the franchise and it simply looks great! Can't wait 'till November!

Noticeable, but not (yet) recommendable
The Simpsons Game (PS3, X360, Wii) - Past Simpsons games haven't fared very well under VU Games' development arm (excluding Hit and Run) but this time under EA, the game takes a turn for the good (or so it seems) as it injects humor upon different gaming conventions and satirizes with sarcastic humor similar to the TV series and hit feature film these said conventions. For example, Comic Book Guy would comment on moves using different gaming cliches. Say, a double jump. Instead of saying, "You've learned the double jump! Once in mid-air, press this button again to perform.", he'll say, "The double jump. How original.". Yes, to gamers it'll be funniest but some of the more hardcore crowd of gamers will know where the game references this one to- "You can't swim until the sequel."- or something like that...

It features great cell-shading and the hopes are high in the gameplay aspect. Hopefully it's not all flash and humor but substance as well, but Marge Simpson using a megaphone to detest gaming violence? Pretty awkward in an adventure format...

VIDEO CAPTION: This Simpsons Game video spoofs the over-energetic-ness of Japanese games, most noticeably in its game shows. Heck, the head is most probably a spoof of Dr. Kawashima in Brain Age!

Wii Fit (Wii, duh.) - The Wii certainly has lots of potential left in it. And Nintendo is on a journey to harvest all of it. The video below certainly says all... and it's pretty cool what Nintendo's trying to do. I guess all gamers can't be couch potatoes anyway. Oh and if this counts as an enticement factor, Shigeru Miyamoto also thought of this as well...
